A Program Of The

City Of Columbia

SSO in Progress

The City of Columbia’s wastewater (sewer) system is aging. Older systems are sensitive to wet-weather events that can cause problems such as sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs). Therefore, the City is committed to assessing the system and replacing or rehabilitating undersized infrastructure.

Clean Water 2020 is assessing and improving:

  • Large portions of the wastewater collection system
  • Numerous pump stations
  • Portions of the wastewater treatment plant

The primary goal is to reduce SSOs. The City is dedicated to the Clean Water 2020 program of projects which are designed to protect the public's health and safety and improve water quality.
